Managers, supervisors, safety representatives and those with a responsibility for co-ordinating health and safety in the workplace.

At the end of the course delegates will be able to identify hazards in the workplace and suggest suitable controls; understand the function of a health and safety management system; conduct a safety inspection of the workplace and write a report to management on the findings.

The course is divided into 3 distinct units and students have the option of spreading their study over a five year period.

NGC1 management of safety and health
NGC2 controlling workplace hazards
NGC3 practical exam.


Topics include:

NGC1

• legal requirements relating to health and safety in the workplace
• assessing and reducing risks
• aspects of safety management and human behaviour
• monitoring safety in the workplace

NGC2

• common workplace hazards and methods of control
• health hazards and methods of control
• construction safety

The assessment consists of two written exam papers NGC1 and NGC2; each paper is of two hours' duration.  The practical test NGC3 involves an inspection of a workplace and the preparation of a report.  A certificate is awarded for each successfully completed unit.  NGC3 must be undertaken with either NGC1 or NGC2 written paper.

The course consists of 12 lecture days plus 1 day incorporating the practical test and 1/2 day revision and 1 day of written examinations.
