| Directors and senior managers of small to medium enterprises (up to 250 employees). |

| To enable directors and senior managers to understand the nature and purpose of good health and safety management and its place in reducing a company's overall risk. |

- identify accident causes and plan for prevention through risk assessment and control strategies
- explain the consequences of failing to manage health and safety effectively
- understand the importance of employee selection and the effect of human factors on health and safety
- recognise the importance of communication with employees on health and safety issues
- appreciate the significance of performance monitoring for continual improvement of health and safety management.

The course is arranged into 8 modules and provides an understanding of the knowledge and skills required to implement an effective health and safety management system.
Topics include:

- the moral, legal and business case for effective health and safety management outlining the roles of directors
- raising awareness and understanding of accidents and their causes
- The requirement for effective health and safety management; its principles and strategic implementation
- the importance of a risk-based approach to successful planning
- recognising the value of people within the organisation and factors affecting their performance
- exploring methods of measuring performance
- considering ways of improving performance.

| Assessment of the Course: |
| There is a multi-choice assessment paper and a short project. Successful delegates will be awarded an Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) certificate. |
